Hi Kel, The word 'logorrhea', which is excessive speech, lends itself to what should be know from this point on as blogorrhea.

Somebody had to say it out loud. Was the elephant in the social media room. And you pointed it out! The emperor has no clothes!

And, hey, I'm getting my trunk outta here. Pew!

Great post. -Barb

tim, that's a great analogy! like high school, i find the "popular" social media icons to be very clicky and exclusive. i find many just "talk" to hear their own voice. the thing with the popular crowd in high school is they usually end up being losers later in life. guess we will have to see if that plays out here. ha!

The social media subculture is like high school. Seriously. In every way. I don't mean a little bit. I mean almost exactly. I have a tough time with that. I didn't really like high school very much. If it was more like college, we'd all be better off. Up to the next level, so to speak. But what does that really mean, and how do we get there?

christopher, you ask a great question. i have no idea what the hell will happen and anyone who claims to know is full of crap. ha! seriously, i think that a lot of the diarrhea will be diluted by "good" content -- whatever that means. whether that means a short list emerges or a long list disappears is anybody's guess - maybe it is d) all of the above.

Bwahahahaha! I just got turned on to your blog today and boy I got a good one. In fact, some friends in a social media club here in KC, and I were just making the analogy of the stud and his conquests akin to the number of followers. Good grief. Thanks for waiting for a big one today... you must feel better. Can't wait for more insights from you. (still laughing)

This is an intersting topic. Over the past few years, it seems that every PR/marketing/communications conference has been talking about the breakdown of centralized media. And we're seeing the evolution of news/information/opinion gathering go from being issued by the "traditional" media to dissemination by anyone with an opinion, computer and internet connection. Regarding the last comment (#6), Kel, do you feel that with all this "noise," social media may evolve into something else entirely? Maybe again it will be dominated by a few big players? Maybe the whole media landscape swings like a pendulum - don;t forget that before there were the Big Three broadcasters, that there were tons and tons of newspapers.

thanks karen! i feel like over time the natural ecosystem will weed out all the crap (literally & figuratively as described in this post). in the meantime, i think it's important we do our part to keep it shit-free.

There's definitely a lot of noise out there. I think that's one of the biggest challenges in social media & online marketing--how to cut through the noise and get the relevant message out. Self policing is a good start, but it's hard to cut through the clutter online. I'm hopeful quality will win out over quantity. Your post illustrates the issue beautifully.

lauren, thanks for the comment. there are some social media icons like tony hsieh from zappos who have a million plus twitter followers, but who remain humble though its all. these are the kind of people i look forward to hearing from. btw, i had granola for breakfast. haha!

Your thoughts on this topic are extremely interesting! I love how you likened gaining followers and friends on social media sites to the stud in the physical world sleeping with woman after woman and becoming more arrogant with each one. There are getting to be too many people out there who celebrate hitting the 1 million Twitter follower mark - but who tweet about such bland topics like what they ate for breakfast and what their afternoon schedule looks like. I enjoy reading your blog and taking in your insights, but definitley value someone who knows when to just leave a topic alone even if everyone else seems to be discussing it!

jim, thanks for sharing your perspective in a humorous way. i always tell people that a diarrhea stream of tweets is like standing 2" from someone's face at a dinner party and droning on about nothing. nobody wants to be on the receiving end of that empty blather (your words and i love them!) in the physical world, so why would they want that experience in a the social media world?!

Hi, Kel,

Mental pictures notwithstanding ;-), I think you're dead-on. If social media/Web 2.0/engagement branding is about relevance, then talking (tweeting/blogging/updating) purely for the sake of staying on the radar is self-defeating. Empty blather is never relevant to anyone. Trying to attract anyone with a pulse to "listen" to you is similarly foolish. Unless you speak from a whirlwind or a flying saucer, you can't be relevant to countless hordes with any reliable regularity.

As a practitioner and adviser on personal branding issues, I understand well the temptation (and guilty anxiety) that can arise after a couple of days without delivering any pearls of brilliance to devoted followers. Thanks for the reminder that saving your breath until you have a relevant thought is wiser than spewing hot air just to remind people you're breathing. (I'm a little more comfortable with respiratory metaphors than digestive ones.) :-)

Cheers,
